DETAILS: Re-imagining of Batman as a Playmobil figurine. Using a Playmobil figure as photo reference, I created a collage for use as a reference.

THE PROBLEM: I wanted to create a Playmobil style illustration of Batman to make a T-Shirt for my son.

THE APPROACH: Since (at the time of creation) I could not find an existing product to refer to, I photographed a simple Playmobil figure and uploaded to photoshop where I traced components with the pen tool in Adobe Photoshop for separation into layers. I exported the vector line work and opened them in Adobe Illustration to rework into an illustration that I could customize into Batman. I then returned to Photoshop for finishing touches and compositing in order to achieve a simple plastic appearance (which I would now do directly in Illustrator to maintain the vector scaleability.

THE RESULTS: A fun little illustration project that merged one of my favourite comic book characters with one of my favourite childhood toys. This exercise was a reminder that there is always an easier way to do things, but sometimes a little extra manual 'cut and paste’ can be more fun and teach invaluable lessons in production through problem solving.
